Custom lingerie made to fit your body.

Why the atelier exists

A standard size fits an average body, and very few people are one.

About

Helm Toss is a small atelier in Yokote, Akita. It makes lingerie to order because ready-to-wear sizing ignores the numbers that decide whether a band stays down and a wire sits where it should.

How we work

Every piece follows a fixed process. No shortcuts, no guesswork.

Start a commission enquiry

Styles and options

Every piece is made to order. There is no standard sizing and no ready-made stock. A commission covers the conversation, the toile, the construction and an adjustment round, with price and schedule agreed in writing before any cutting begins. Fabric options include silk charmeuse, stretch lace, cotton jersey and powernet.

How we work

Your measurements, taken seriously

We begin with a detailed measurement form and, where possible, a video consultation. Bust, underbust, hip, torso length, cup projection. We record all of it before a single pattern is drafted.

We do not grade up from a standard size. Each pattern is drawn to your specific numbers, then adjusted after a toile fitting before we cut into the final fabric.

Fabric chosen with you

We work with silk charmeuse, stretch lace, cotton jersey and powernet. Special fabrics are sourced for a commission once you have chosen them, and the source is noted on your pattern card.

Underwires are cased by hand. Straps are cut on the bias for stretch recovery. Every hook-and-eye tape is sewn flat, not folded, so it lies smooth against the skin.

Lingerie Trends for Autumn and Winter in Japan

Seasonal lingerie trends in Japan tend to move differently from European fashion cycles. The shift from summer to autumn is less about colour palettes and more about fabric weight and layering. Cotton jersey gives way to silk charmeuse; soft-cup bralettes are replaced by more structured pieces as heavier outer layers require a different foundation. This post looks at what is changing this season and how those shifts translate into bespoke commissions.

Bra Styles Explained: Which Silhouette Fits Your Body

Walk into any lingerie section in Japan and you will find the same four or five silhouette names repeated across dozens of brands. The labels are consistent. The construction behind them is not. A balconette from one manufacturer is a full-cup from another with a lower neckline. Understanding what each silhouette actually does structurally makes it much easier to know what to ask for. Whether you are shopping ready-to-wear or commissioning something bespoke.

How to Measure Yourself for a Bra at Home

The measurement form we send to new clients has eight fields. Most people fill in two or three confidently and guess the rest. That is not a criticism. Standard sizing has given most of us very little reason to learn our actual measurements. This guide walks through each measurement, explains what it is for, and describes the most common mistakes so you can avoid them.

Pattern, toile, final cut

Every Helm Toss pattern is drawn by hand on paper from the client's measurement form, then sewn up in cotton muslin and checked at a toile fitting before any silk or lace is cut. The work is done in the atelier in Yokote, Akita. The business rests on a single observation: a well-fitted bra needs a made-to-measure pattern, not a size adjustment.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Q01

How do I take my measurements accurately at home?

We send a detailed measurement guide when you start a commission. It covers underbust, bust, hip, torso length and cup projection using a soft tape measure. If you are unsure about any measurement, a video call is the right place to go through it together, so we can walk you through the process in real time.

Q02

Do I need to visit Yokote for a fitting?

No. The entire process can be done remotely. You fill in the measurement form, we draft the pattern, and we discuss the toile over video. If you would rather come to the atelier in Yokote, Akita, that is possible by appointment arranged by email.
